Commemoration of the first laser eye surgery in Czechoslovakia 60 years ago with Jan Blabla

It has been 60 years since the first laser eye surgery in Czechoslovakia, when a young girl with a completely torn retina underwent the first laser eye surgery under the guidance of Dr. Jan John in the building of our institute. The operation went well and the girl’s eye was saved.

The actor of this famous event, Jan Blabla, visited the ÚFE on June 19. They reminisced about the pioneering time of Czechoslovak lasers with Prof. Miroslava Vrbová, with whom a little later, in 1966, they carried out the first Czechoslovak free-space laser communication. It was a connection between the tower of our institute and the building of the Research Institute of Communication Technology (VÚST) in Prague – Lhotka.
