Controlled immobilization of interfacing biomolecular assemblies

The main objective of the project is to gain a scientific base that will allow us to prepare in a controlled way artificial supermolecular assemblies containing biological macromolecules. The assemblies will consist of multiple molecular layers of proteins, or proteins and polysaccharides. The relationship between intermolecular interactions (particularly electrostatic and hydrophobic), the assembly preparation procedure, the assembly composition, structure, and properties will be studied with thegoal of producing assemblies of desired function. A particular attention will be paid to assemblies capable of affinity binding specific biological compounds, assemblies compatible with blood plasma and blood, and assemblies supporting cell adhesion and proliferation. Antibody containing assemblies will be immobilized on various surface plasmon resonance immunosensors and carriers for affinity separation methods (magnetic particles and porous polymer membranes).
