Jiří Homola ranked among 2% most cited scientists in the world in 2019. He was the fifth most cited scientist in the Czech Republic.

A group of authors associated with PLoS BiologyElsevier and Stanford University published a list of 2 % of the world's most cited scientists last year. 359 of them work at Czech research institutions. The largest number of highly cited scientists work at the Czech Academy of Sciences, Charles University and Palacký University in Olomouc. The 5th most cited Czech scientist in 2019 was Jiří Homola from the Institute of Photonics and Electronics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, who managed to be ranked among the 2000 most cited scientists in the world. Prof. Ing. Jiří Homola, CSc., DSc. works as a director and researcher at the Institute of Photonics and Electronics of the CAS. He is engaged in the research of optical biosensors and is one of the world's leaders in this field. He is a member of the Learned Society of the Czech Republic. For his research he received a number of awards, such as the Award of the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic for extraordinary results in research and experimental development, the Czech Head Award, Praemium Academiae AS CR or Roche Prize for Sensor Technology. He is an Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington in the USA and teaches at the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering of the Czech Technical University and at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University in Prague.
