Institute of Photonics and Electronics of the Czech Academy of Sciences<\/h3>

The Institute of Photonics and Electronics (\u00daFE) is a public research institution that is part of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the largest Czech non-university research organisation. The main activity of the \u00daFE is research in the field of photonics, optoelectronics and electronics, complemented by metrology, education and popularisation. The \u00daFE contributes to the development of knowledge in several research areas and creates a broad knowledge base as a basis for the development of new cutting-edge technologies.<\/p>

The \u00daFE started its activities in 1954, and until 2007 it existed under the name of the Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics (URE). Some of the important events that the scientists of the Institute have contributed to in the past include, for example, some of the first masers and lasers<\/a> in the country, the first laser eye surgery<\/a>, the propagation of precise time by television signal, and the opening of a laboratory for research on optical fibre technology, all in the former Czechoslovakia.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Research<\/strong><\/h3>

The programme of the Institute covers six research fields<\/a> which is reflected in its structure with the research teams.<\/p>

In the field of photonics the \u00daFE focuses on research and development of new optical biosensors, high-power fiber lasers, coherent light generation in mid-IR spectral region and specialty optical fibers.<\/p>

In the field of optoelectronics, the \u00daFE pursues research on electrical and optical phenomena occuring on the surfaces and interfaces of nanomaterials. These phenomena are induced by photons, ions, electrons, and the adsorption of atoms and molecules and are used for applications in sensing, new sources of light generation and in advanced analytic and imaging processes.<\/p>

In the field of electronics, the focus lies on the study of electrodynamic properties of biological systems and development of detection systems.
The \u00daFE has been entrusted with the responsibility for the National Standard Time and Frequency and runs and develops The Laboratory of the National Time and Frequency Standard.<\/p>

Education<\/h3>

The \u00daFE cooperates with the universities and thus contributes to higher quality of education in both traditional and emerging new research fields. The \u00daFE researchers give lectures at the universities and university students have an opportunity to work at the \u00daFE on their Master\u00b4s and doctoral theses.<\/p>

The high school students can do their traineeships at the \u00daFE under the project of the Czech Academy of Sciences \u201eOtev\u0159en\u00e1 v\u011bda<\/a>\u201c (Open Science).<\/p>

Popularization<\/h3>

The \u00daFE regularly organizes seminars for the researchers and scientists and partakes in the organization of many conferences. The \u00daFE researchers are regular participants in the popularization lectures, e.g. during science festivals \u201eT\u00fdden Akademie v\u011bd<\/a>\u201c (The week of the Czech Academy of Sciences) \u2013 formerly \u201eT\u00fdden v\u011bdy a techniky AV \u010cR\u201c (the Week of Science and Technology of the CAS) and \u201eVeletrh v\u011bdy<\/a>\u201c (The Science Fair).<\/p>

The general public is regularly given an opportunity to have an insight into the scientific work in the \u00daFE laboratories during the Open-door Days held traditionally at the beginning of November.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
