the detection of chemical and biological substances important for medical diagnostics, food safety or environmental protection, and for the study of biomolecules and biomolecular interactions in molecular biology and pharmaceutical research. We specialize primarily in optical biosensors that enable non-invasive, fast and sensitive analysis using special electromagnetic waves \u2013 surface plasmons.<br \/><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-5c98854 );\"><br \/>We combine theoretical and experimental knowledge from several areas of physics, chemistry and biology. This multidisciplinary research includes a wide range of activities &#8211; from the research of photonic and plasmonic (nano)structures and functional biomolecular ensembles, through the development of optical measurement methods and systems, to their use for the study of biomolecular interactions and the detection of chemical and biological substances. We are engaged in the development of sophisticated laboratory systems and mobile biosensor solutions for use outside the laboratory.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-5c98854 );\"><br \/>Our biosensors enable direct study of biomolecular interactions in real time and without the use of labels. Using our biosensors, we aim to understand the biomolecular principles of biological processes, especially those related to the occurance and development of diseases. Specifically, we look to control the placement of the biomolecules on the photonic (nano)structures, and furthermore, to optimize the properties of the photonic (nano)structures functionalized with biomolecules with respect to their interactions with biological media.<\/p>\n<h3>Microfluidics and transport phenomenon<\/h3>\n<p>We investigate microfluidic methods to improve the performance of optical biosensors, focusing on the design and optimization of low-cost and practical flow cells for everyday use. In this process we examine the interplay between the physics associated with the sensor design and the role of convection, diffusion, and chemical reactions.<\/p>\n<h3>Measurement methods and sensor instrumentation<\/h3>\n<p>We research optical measurement techniques, including measurement principles, instrumentation, and data processing approaches, to create optical systems for high-performance optical biosensors.
