IERS follows the deviation between UTC and UT1 if it is greater than 0.9 s, reports the appropriate change by the use of leap seconds.<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p><p>When a positive leap second is inserted into UTC (added), then the clock will show the following time change:<\/p><p>23:59:59,<br \/>23:59:60,<br \/>00:00:00.<\/p><p>In case of a negative leap seconds clocks show:<\/p><p>23:59:57,<br \/>23:59:58,<br \/>00:00:00.<\/p><p>The first leap second was added in 1972.
