Advanced two-dimensional mode expansion method developed recently at the proposer?s laboratory will be extended and further improved. Its efficient application to plasmonic structures will be significantly boosted by the following modifications: a) incorporation of more efficient absorption boundary conditions (perfectly matched layers) based on complex coordination transformation, b) improving the convergence rate as the number of harmonics is increased by the application of the adaptive spatial resolution technique, and possibly also c) the extension of the method to 3-D structures. Other modelling methods (finite-difference and-or finite element method) will be used for efficient assessment, too. It is expected that COST Action 0803 will benefit from the proposed project mainly by its ability to contribute to answering very fundamental questions of plasmonics, namely to define, properly assess and promote the application possibilities of plasmonic waveguides, (partially) metallic photonic crys
